Italo Ottinetti and a passion for aluminum

In 1920, Italo Ottinetti, born in 1898 and a former World War I soldier, founded with several partners, in Baveno—a charming village on the shores of Lake Maggiore, now in the province of Verbania—the metalworking company that still bears his name.

In the small factory, aluminum was processed through a complete production cycle: the ingot was melted to produce a sheet, which was then rolled to form a disk. The disk was subsequently pressed or spun to create the finished product.

Production was essentially artisanal, resulting in high-quality articles that Italo Ottinetti personally sold throughout Italy, as far south as Sicily. At that time, the range included cutlery, cookware, and accessories for families, as shown in the 1925 catalog, the year in which Italo Ottinetti became the company’s sole owner.

The business prospered, and the factory expanded to employ more than 50 people before World War II. This workforce later declined as much of the production process was mechanized during the years of the economic boom.
