Italo Ottinetti and a passion for aluminum
In 1920, Italo Ottinetti, born in 1898 and a former World War I soldier, founded the metalworking company that still bears his name with several associates in Baveno — a charming village on the shores of Lake Maggiore, now in the province of Verbania.
In the small factory, aluminum was processed through a complete production cycle: the ingot was melted to obtain a sheet, which was then rolled to form a disc. This was subsequently stamped or spun to create the finished product.
This was essentially artisanal production of high-quality articles, which Italo Ottinetti personally sold throughout Italy, as far as Sicily. At the time, the range included cutlery, cookware and accessories for families, as evidenced by the 1925 catalog, the year in which Italo Ottinetti became the company’s sole owner.
The business prospered, and the factory expanded to employ more than 50 people before World War II. This workforce later declined as much of the production process was mechanized during the years of the economic boom.
